Institute Class with Ann
White on Women in Christian History. Our Reformed tradition cast women in a new
religious light -- as members of the priesthood of all believers, as students
of scripture, as partners in a school for character (marriage). The Biblical
witness says that women are men’s equals in God’s eyes. How has the Christian
church interpreted this witness? We will briefly consider women in Christian
Europe before the Reformation and then focus on the Reformation’s views of
women. We will examine the ways in which Christian women and men interpreted
their lives together in 16th and 17th century Europe, in Puritan New England,
and in the nineteenth century United States. Five part series. |
