Institute Class with Ann White:Varieties of Christian Friendship.”
No one works alone for the coming of God’s kingdom. Across the ages Christian leaders have developed close and rewarding friendships and have relied on their friends, in good times and in bad. Using historical sources, including Scripture, this course will study the friendships of St. Paul, Augustine, Martin Luther, Abigail Adams, Abraham Lincoln, and other significant figures. All of these Christian leaders had reason to be grateful to God for one of his most splendid gifts to human beings-- deep and true friendships. We will discuss what these friendships of the past can teach us about Christian friendship and how they can enrich our own lives.

Institute Class with Ann White on Women in Christian History.  Our Reformed tradition cast women in a new religious light -- as members of the priesthood of all believers, as students of scripture, as partners in a school for character (marriage). The Biblical witness says that women are men’s equals in God’s eyes. How has the Christian church interpreted this witness? We will briefly consider women in Christian Europe before the Reformation and then focus on the Reformation’s views of women. We will examine the ways in which Christian women and men interpreted their lives together in 16th and 17th century Europe, in Puritan New England, and in the nineteenth century United States. Five part series.
